Bioinformatics department was established in the year 2003. It runs only PG programme. It was started with 13 students as the first batch. The sanctioned strength for PG Programme is 30, and this programme draws students from neighboring states of Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur.
The Department has got competent and enthusiastic faculty members who are always there to lend a helping hand to students in both academic and extra-curricular activities.
The department has a well-equipped, air-conditioned laboratory with 17 computers and with the most recent Pentium-4 Processors. Added to these, it has got 24 hours Internet facility which is offered by Reliance connectivity, noticeably very fast. The Lab imparts internet facility to all disciplines.
Course Objective
Bioinformatics is an emerging multidisciplinary field of science which facilitates fast and easy retrieval of data relating to all facets human endeavour. So, to make others conscious of this recent field of science. Bioinformatics is the integration of mathematical, statistical and computer methods to analyse biological, biochemical and biophysical data. It is the science of developing computer databases and algorithms for the purpose of speeding up and enhancing biological research. Bioinformatics is being used most noticeably in the Human Genome Project, the effort to identify the 80,000 genes in human DNA.
The masters degree course aims to train students in bioinformatics by providing them with background in molecular biology and computer science, including database design and analytical approach. Students are offered an intensive curriculum with specially designed courses in computer science, Mathematics and Bioinformatics along with Biochemistry, Biophysics, Statistics and Biology.
